Part 2

The scene outside was nothing she could have prepared for. Cooper and Wynn were obviously hunting some poor bug while her dad watched them with a smile on his face. Seeing how content each of them was should have alarmed her but it felt good. It felt right. Walking over to her dad, Ella leaned her head against his shoulder and they watched in silence. She knew her dad well enough to know he had plenty to say but would wait until later to say it.

It took Wynn a couple of minutes to realize Ella had joined the group but Cooper knew the moment she walked outside. Her presence always sent a ripple through him and made him wonder how he had gone this long without feeling so alive. Having Ella back in his world after all these years was like being pulled from a fog. Everything was clear again. Everything was worth it and even the most mundane chore was pleasurable. He was determined not to let the past repeat itself. He had to keep her, the cost to lose her twice would be too much to bear.
